\n\tSanatorium<\/em>, a documentary directed by Gar O\u2019Rourke about an ex-Soviet wellness resort in Ukraine, is\u00a0Ireland\u2019s submission for the best international feature film category at the 98th Oscars. The Irish Film and Television Academy unveiled its choice of Ireland\u2019s official entry for the international feature category at the\u00a0Academy Awards on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tIn 2022, The Quiet Girl<\/em> became the first film submitted by Ireland to be nominated in the category. The country has never won the international Oscar.<\/p>\n \n\tLast year\u2019s submission was Rich Peppiatt\u2019s Kneecap<\/em>.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cBoth patients and staff search for health, happiness, and love while the [Russia-started] war echoes through the lime green corridors\u201d of Kuyalnyk Sanatorium, reads a film synopsis. \u201cEvery summer, people of all ages arrive in their thousands at a huge ex-Soviet treatment center in Odesa on the southern coast of\u00a0Ukraine. A time capsule from the \u201970s, built in the brutalist style of the era, it still offers therapeutic treatments from the glory days of the Soviet Union. The main attraction is the mysterious mud which is believed to cure infertility, chronic ailments, and a myriad of other health problems.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tBut beyond the physical health goals, many guests are really searching for happiness and love above all else,\u00a0Sanatorium<\/em>\u00a0shows as O\u2019Rourke and the camera of cinematographer Denys Melnyk follow them to tell their stories. As such, the doc is also a declaration of love for the Ukrainian people, their spirit, and their resilience.<\/p>\n \n\tSanatorium<\/em> was produced by Venom Films by IFTA-winning\u00a0Ken Wardrop\u00a0and\u00a0Andrew Freedman\u00a0(His & Hers, Making the Grade<\/em>), along with\u00a0Samantha Corr.\u00a0Sanatorium\u00a0<\/em>was co-produced by 2332 Films Ukraine and made with support from Screen Ireland, BBC Storyville, MetFilm Sales, France TV, and Creative Europe. The film was edited by\u00a0John Murphy\u00a0(editor of\u00a0An Cail\u00edn Ci\u00fain<\/em>), with\u00a0Denys Melnyk\u00a0(Militantropos)\u00a0<\/em>as director of photography.
