\n\tItaly\u2019s Rai Cinema will co-produce \u201cPrimo Viaggio,\u201d directed by Alessandro Cassigoli and Casey Kauffman. Teodora Film will distribute locally.<\/p>\n
\n\tThe film, spotlighted at Locarno\u2019s Alliance 4 Development, is produced by Palme d\u2019Or winner Nanni Moretti (\u201cThe Son\u2019s Room,\u201d \u201cWe Have a Pope\u201d) and Benedetta Barroero for Sacher Film, founded back in 1987.<\/p>\n
\n\tIt focuses on Carlo, a 22-year-old from Naples, who accepts a free vacation in Malaga \u2013 in exchange for driving a car full of narcotics back to Italy.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWe have been working in the Naples region for the past nine years. It\u2019s a colorful, crazy place with a lot of interesting stories. Recently, we\u2019ve heard one that really grabbed us. Young people were accepting all-paid-for vacation and a little bit of cash in exchange for transporting hard narcotics from Spain,\u201d said Kauffman.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWe were pretty surprised \u2013 it\u2019s a big risk to take for a holiday in a low-budget resort.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tTheir protagonist comes from Torre Annunziata, \u201cwhich is a close-minded environment. And he\u2019s never travelled before,\u201d said Cassigoli, explaining the film\u2019s title.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWhen he accepts the deal and goes to Spain, what he thinks is just a drug run turns into something totally, totally different. He meets new types of people and has experiences with them that make him question his decisions. It fundamentally changes him.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThe duo started out as friends and flatmates, but then life took over: Kauffman moved to the Middle East to work as a journalist, and Cassigoli focused on making creative docs in Berlin.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWe literally had this ongoing conversation for nine years about how to film people, or how to make the audience care. We were each other\u2019s consultants. When we both moved back to Italy, we decided to make a film,\u201d recalled Kauffman.<\/p>\n
\n\tIn early development, \u201cPrimo Viaggio\u201d will be made following Cassigoli and Kauffman\u2019s style of favoring non-professionals.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tAccording to Barroero, one of their \u201cparticular talents\u201d is \u201ctheir ability to seamlessly combine lived experience with narrative film.\u201d Their story is written down, but as they meet people through street casting, their lives can be \u201cbrought into the script, reshaping the story together with the main character.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cUp until now, we\u2019ve always worked with non-professional actors. It\u2019s because of our background. We are used to throwing ourselves into real stories with real people, in real environments. And we enjoy that,\u201d noted Kauffman.<\/p>\n
\n\tFor their previous film, \u201cVittoria,\u201d after hearing one family\u2019s story they asked them to reinterpret their experience in front of the camera. But \u201cPrimo Viaggio\u201d is a \u201cfurther step into fiction.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cOur main focus is to bring real-life dilemmas and circumstances through street casting into the film. We believe it\u2019s our way of trying to transit the most emotion. The screenplay is more for us and the crew \u2013 the main character will never read it or memorize any lines. He\u2019ll know the story but he\u2019ll interpret the scene based on his own life experience,\u201d added Cassigoli.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tMoretti was also involved in the making of \u201cVittoria.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cOur collaboration began in a very organic way. Our first film, \u2018Californie,\u2019 premiered in Venice in 2021. Later, it was selected for Nanni Moretti\u2019s competition for film debuts. He wasn\u2019t on the jury, but our film won! That started a very interesting conversation,\u201d recalled Kauffman.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cOn \u2018Vittoria,\u2019 we had total freedom. He\u2019s so experienced \u2013 we could have learnt a lot from him on set, but he wanted to leave us alone and let us make our own choices. He got more involved later, once we had a rough cut of the film, and his attention to detail was amazing to see. When he mentioned being a majority producer on this film, we accepted.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tDespite switching locations from Naples to Malaga and even Marseilles, they don\u2019t see \u201cPrimo Viaggio\u201d as a road movie.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cEven though he actually drives in the film! It\u2019s definitely more about his initial circumstances and internal journey,\u201d said Kauffman, with Cassigoli noting: \u201cCarlo is a regular kid from Naples, he lives alone with his grandpa and doesn\u2019t have many opportunities. Once you know he\u2019s about to transport cocaine without much experience in life, it adds a huge tension.
