{"id":15186,"date":"2025-08-11T07:40:03","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T07:40:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=15186"},"modified":"2025-08-11T07:40:03","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T07:40:03","slug":"the-shining-wes-anderson-costume-designer-milena-canonero-locarno","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=15186","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;The Shining,&#8217; Wes Anderson Costume Designer Milena Canonero: Locarno"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMilena Canonero, the legendary Italian costume designer known for her collaborations with the likes of\u00a0Stanley Kubrick, Wes Anderson, Sofia Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola, Warren Beatty and others, made a rare public speaking appearance in Switzerland, in which she provided insight into her career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDuring a talk at the\u00a078th edition\u00a0of the\u00a0Locarno Film Festival, where she received this year\u2019s Vision Award on Sunday evening, Canonero recalled her first meeting with Anderson at the Chateau Marmont to discuss <em>The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou<\/em>. \u201cHe was really friendly and open-minded,\u201d she said. \u201cOf course, I was familiar with his movies, including the very early ones. So I was very happy to get to know him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDifferent directors have different focus areas, of course. \u201cWes is very much involved with the look of his characters,\u201d the costume design legend highlighted. \u201cObjects, decorations, and all these things are very important to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhile Kubrick \u201cdoesn\u2019t tell you much\u201d until late in the process, \u201cwith Wes, it\u2019s a sort of a symbiosis,\u201d Canonero said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAbout <em>The Grand Budapest Hotel<\/em>, she recalled that, \u201cI didn\u2019t want to design the usual green or brown or black uniforms, even off-white. It was just by chance that I noticed \u2026 this amazing purple color.\u201d She added: \u201cWhen I met Wes at his countryside home in the U.K., I said \u2026 look at this, and he jumped on the chair and said \u2018This is it\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About the look she developed for Tilda Swinton\u2019s Madame D character, Canonero said: \u201cThe film is set in the \u201820s, \u201830s. So I thought about [Gustav] Klimt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAbout her education, Canonero said: \u201cI never went to any costume design school,\u201d but attended special night classes in the U.K.\u00a0\u201cI learned everything in the U.K. I owe everything to the U.K.\u201d<br \/>She added: \u201cI never completed my studies in any country of the world, and I keep studying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe costume designer then discussed her long-running creative partnership with Francis Ford Coppola, including on <em>Megalopolis<\/em>, which he self-funded. The director wanted to \u201cfocus on the architect Cesar Catilina [played by Adam Driver] rather than Cicero [Giancarlo Esposito] who represents the establishment,\u201d she said. \u201cFrancis made it very clear that they are two opposites.\u201d<br \/>Given the story\u2019s references to antique Rome, l the costumes she presented to the director included historic references.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCanonero explained the movie, which has divided opinions, this way: \u201cIt is a fable about a great country, like America, that is in the middle of chaos \u2026 and that is crashing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCanonero also discussed working with Sofia Coppola on <em>Marie Antoinette<\/em>, emphasizing that \u201cthe evolution of Marie Antoinette was Sofia\u2019s interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThat in turn had an impact on the costume choices. \u201cIt\u2019s a completely different 18th century compared to [Kubrick\u2019s] <em>Barry Lyndon<\/em>\u2019s,\u201d she said. That meant \u201ca lot of creative freedom where you mix up the present and the past with a pop attitude.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCanonero also traveled to the Swiss fest to introduce a screening of <em>Megalopolis.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tShe has won four Academy Awards for best costume design, namely for Kubrick\u2019s\u00a0<em>Barry Lyndon<\/em>\u00a0(1975), Hugh Hudson\u2019s\u00a0<em>Chariots of Fire<\/em>\u00a0(1981), Sofia Coppola\u2019s\u00a0<em>Marie Antoinette<\/em>, and Anderson\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Grand Budapest Hotel<\/em>, along with three BAFTAs, three Costume Designers Guild Awards, the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, and various other honors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cSince making her debut as a costume designer on Stanley Kubrick\u2019s\u00a0<em>A Clockwork Orange\u00a0<\/em>(1971), Milena Canonero has produced some of the most visionary costumes in film history and has shaped our collective imagination through the clothes we see on screen, using colorful fabrics and innovative cuts to draw out the essential natures of some of the most recognizable cinematic creations,\u201d Locarno organizers said when they unveiled her as this year\u2019s honoree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cLike a Renaissance artist, she has combined the profound wisdom of craftsmanship with the potential of cinema, thus opening infinite spaces for human imagination and expression,\u201d Locarno\u2019s artistic director Giona A.
