In the action thriller, she plays a widowed woman who just wanted to go fishing in snowbound Minnesota. Instead, she finds herself in the middle of a kidnapping plot. Thompson also executive produced the film.\u00a0

Written by Nicholas Jacobson-Larson and Dalton Leeb, both from Minnesota, it pays homage to the \u201camazing women\u201d who raised them, said Jacobson-Larson, with Leeb mentioning his own grandmother who \u201cwould always face adversity face on with humor\u201d as inspiration.\u00a0

\u201cIt feels like a hero you don\u2019t see very often,\u201d he said, with his star agreeing.

\u201cThe boys are right: 30 years ago, when I was starting out, I had this woman\u2019s group. My first question to them was: \u2018Who\u2019s the female hero?\u2019 I was still identifying with Marlon Brando and I wasn\u2019t happy about it,\u201d Thompson said.

\u201cThis woman is a real female heroine because she doesn\u2019t say: \u2018You should be afraid because I have certain skills.\u2019 I mean, she can sew, she\u2019s been formed by weather and lived in close proximity with nature. She knows that she can mess people up by freezing their stuff.\u201d

She reached out to Leeb\u2019s aunt Tracy in order to master the accent.

\u201cThe first time we did [a Zoom call] I did it in my normal voice and they were very confused,\u201d she laughed.\u00a0\u00a0

\u201cI spent hours and hours talking to everyone over there. But the making of this movie was mostly about gloves. We needed three pairs. She shoots in one pair, has a fight in another. There were gloves everywhere! The Minnesotans said we needed them because if you get cold hands, your life is over.\u201d\u00a0

Laurel Marsden, Judy Greer and Marc Menchaca were also cast in the film, as well as Thompson\u2019s daughter Gaia Wise, who plays her younger self.

\u201cWe went on long walks before we started and talked about what [this couple\u2019s] life would have been like. What they\u2019d have eaten, what games they played and what their conversations were. Gaia plays her in the \u2018full of love\u2019 bit of her life \u2013 I was in the \u2018my life is over, and I got to say goodbye\u2019 piece. She\u2019s grieving and something distracts her, and then she\u2019s back to where she started. It\u2019s such a beautiful circle,\u201d Thompson said.

As for filming the movie\u2019s violent scenes, she said: \u201cThere are no words. Why start this whole action stuff when you are 66 years old?! That\u2019s just stupid.\u201d

In order to prepare, she spent a whole month in Finland, where the film was partly shot. Thompson already praised the Finnish crew in an open letter to the industry following the shoot.\u00a0

\u201cI would encourage colleagues in my industry with all my heart to locate productions here \u2013 if you need dramatic landscape, it is here, if you need brave-hearted, highly sensitive and indomitable crew people, they are here, if you need comfort and a homely life, it is here,\u201d she wrote.

Speaking on Finland, she continued: \u201cIt wasn\u2019t just cold \u2014 it was cold.<\/em> It grips you like metal. We took our clothes off, sat in a Finnish sauna and got into a frozen lake to get used to it! One thing that genuinely scared me was holding my breath under water. Judy and I did that training with a man called, get this, Kirk Crack.\u201d Crack is a freediving expert. \u201cWe were so scared of that.\u201d\u00a0

The best way to warm up was to lie down naked in the snow, observed her director.\u00a0

\u201cI could do it right now \u2013 I\u2019ve never been so hot. I\u2019m having a second menopause,\u201d she said, cooling herself with an electric fan at the fest.\u00a0

But despite all the struggles, the film is ultimately \u201calso about survival and rebirth,\u201d noted Kirk. \u201cThere\u2019s an incredible degree of hope here.\u201d This is also because Thompson\u2019s character helps a young girl, played by Marsden, find \u201cthe capacity and the desire to live.\u201d

\u201cWhat greater gift could be given to someone who\u2019s despairing? It\u2019s a very difficult time for young people and she\u2019s a recognizable version of that,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cI think we\u2019ve lost the notion of sacrifice in our life, not in a religious but in a purely human sense. But you can\u2019t just have a good life [without sacrifice]. It doesn\u2019t just come.\u201d
