\n\tJames Cameron said in a recent interview with Rolling Stone that he\u2019s given his filmmaking career entirely to the \u201cAvatar\u201d franchise for decades in the hope of doing good for the world and not just making boat loads of money, which the films have been quite good at doing so far. The director\u2019s original \u201cAvatar\u201d film from 2009 is the highest-grossing movie of all time (unadjusted for inflation) with $2.9 billion. The 2022 sequel, \u201cAvatar: The Way of Water,\u201d is the third highest-grossing movie ever with $2.3 billion.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve justified making\u00a0\u2018Avatar\u2019\u00a0movies to myself for the last 20 years, not based on how much money we made, but on the basis that hopefully it can do some good,\u201d Cameron told the publication. \u201cIt can help connect us, it can help connect us to our lost aspect of ourself that connects with nature and respects nature and all those things.\u201d <\/p>\n
\n\tThe director continued, \u201cDo I think that movies are the answer to our human problems? No, I think they\u2019re limited because people sometimes just want entertainment and they don\u2019t want to be challenged in that way. I think\u00a0\u2018Avatar\u2019\u00a0is a Trojan horse strategy that gets you into a piece of entertainment, but then works on your brain and your heart a little bit in a way.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tWhile Cameron is finally trying to branch out of the \u201cAvatar\u201d franchise by developing new movies \u201cThe Devils\u201d and \u201cGhosts of Hiroshima,\u201d he is fully planning to stay put in Pandora for the time being. He\u2019s in post-production on \u201cAvatar: Fire and Ash,\u201d the third movie that arrives in theaters later this year, and recently told Empire that he\u2019s feeling healthy enough to direct \u201cAvatar 4\u201d and \u201cAvatar 5\u201d himself.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cI mean, there\u2019s no reason not to,\u201d Cameron said ahead of his 71st birthday. \u201cI\u2019m healthy, I\u2019m good to go. I\u2019m not going to rule it out. I mean, I\u2019ve got to make it in a vigorous way, to handle the kind of volume and energy of the work for another six or seven years. You know what I mean? I might not be able to do that\u2026 [but] if I can, I\u2019ll just do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tOne would have to go back to 1997\u2019s \u201cTitanic\u201d for the last time Cameron made a movie that wasn\u2019t set on Pandora. His decision to pivot full time to the \u201cAvatar\u201d movies has proven divisive with some cinephiles who cherish Cameron\u2019s non-\u201cAvatar\u201d output. The director told Empire in 2022 that he didn\u2019t mind staying put in one franchise because \u201cAvatar\u201d is \u201cso sprawling that I can tell most of the stories I want to tell within it and try many of the stylistic techniques that I hope to explore.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cPeople are always asking us, \u2018So why did you just keep working in the same\u2026\u2019 Why did [George] Lucas keep working in the same thing? Why did [Gene] Roddenberry keep working in the same thing?\u201d Cameron added. \u201cBecause when you connect with people, why would you squander that? Why would you start over with something else that might not connect?\u201d<\/p>\n
