\n\tScott MacDonough, a veteran unit publicist who worked on films including Annie Hall<\/em>, Norma Rae<\/em> and Diner<\/em>, died Tuesday at his home in New York, his family announced. He was 81.<\/p>\n \n\tMacDonough did publicity for Woody Allen\u2019s The Front<\/em> (1976), Annie Hall<\/em> (1977), Interiors<\/em> (1978) and Manhattan<\/em> (1979) and for the Martin Ritt-directed movies Conrack<\/em> (1974), Casey\u2019s Shadow<\/em> (1978), Norma Rae<\/em> (1979), Back Roads<\/em> (1981) and Stanley & Iris<\/em> (1990).<\/p>\n \n\tIn interviews, Kevin Bacon has given MacDonough credit for helping get Barry Levinson\u2019s Diner<\/em> (1982) released after the film tested poorly and was put on a shelf at MGM\/UA.<\/p>\n \n\tScott Pearsall MacDonough was born on May 15, 1944, in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. When he was 3, he and his sister, Jill, moved with their parents, Dorothy and Jack, to Maplewood, New Jersey, where he would attend Columbia High School.<\/p>\n \n\tAfter graduating from Middlebury College and earning his master\u2019s degree in American Literature from Columbia University, MacDonough began his career as a writer for film and television publications before becoming a unit publicist.<\/p>\n \n\tHis publicity credits included The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart <\/em>(1970), 40 Carats<\/em> (1973), Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams<\/em> (1973), Ciao maschio<\/em> (1978), Chapter Two<\/em> (1979), Gordon Willis\u2019 Windows<\/em> (1980), Robert Altman\u2019s Streamers<\/em> (1983) and The Prince of Pennsylvania<\/em> (1988).<\/p>\n \n\tHe was a unit publicist from 1970-90, with a lot of that time spent at MGM\/UA.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cHe will be remembered for his encyclopedic knowledge of movies, his skilled writing and his incredible sense of humor,\u201d his family noted.<\/p>\n \n\tIn addition to his sister, survivors include his nephew, Chris, and his niece, Noelle.
