\n\tTwo-time Oscar-nominated director Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting<\/em>, Milk<\/em>, Drugstore Cowboy<\/em>), will receive this year\u2019s Campari Passion for Film Award at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival.<\/p>\n \n\tThe honor recognizes film professionals whose creative work \u201creflects a deep and enduring passion for cinema.\u201d Unlike a lifetime achievement award, the Campari Passion for Film Award celebrates artistic vision and the drive to leave a lasting imprint on cinematic storytelling.<\/p>\n \n\tVan Sant will receive the honor in Venice on Sept. 2 ahead of the out of competition world premiere of his new film Dead Man\u2019s Wire<\/em>. The based-on-a-true-story thriller stars Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd, Dacre Montgomery, Colman Domingo, Cary Elwes, Myha\u2019la and Al Pacino.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI\u2019m truly honored to receive the Passion for Film award,\u201d Van Sant said in a statement. \u201cMy heartfelt thanks to Campari for this recognition \u2014 it means a great deal to me. I\u2019m grateful not only for their acknowledgement of my work, but also for their support of one of the world\u2019s great institutions of cinema celebration and exhibition. It\u2019s a privilege to be part of this tradition, and I deeply appreciate the passion they bring to film.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tVenice film festival artistic director Alberto Barbera described Van Sant as \u201ca unique filmmaker in the landscape of contemporary cinema,\u201d noting his ability to shift between mainstream and arthouse filmmaking while maintaining a singular creative identity. \u201cHe has made films that have left a lasting mark on the collective imagination,\u201d Barbera said, citing Drugstore Cowboy<\/em>, My Own Private Idaho<\/em>, Elephant<\/em>, and Milk<\/em>. \u201cA discoverer of talent, he has launched actors such as River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, Casey Affleck, Joaquin Phoenix, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tAn iconic figure in American independent cinema since the 1980s, Van Sant has alternated between minimalist and experimental cinema and more mainstream fare, but always with a focus on characters on the margins of society, struggling with addiction, trauma, or alienation. After his debut Mala Noche<\/em>, he gained international attention with Drugstore Cowboy<\/em>, and secured his critical reputation with My Own Private Idaho<\/em>, which competed in Venice in 1991. <\/p>\n \n\tHis 1997 feature Good Will Hunting<\/em>, which made stars oout of both Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, picked up 9 Oscar nominations and won two.
