\n\tEminent filmmaker Shekhar Kapur is venturing into uncharted territory with \u201cWarlord,\u201d a science fiction series created entirely through artificial intelligence. The project debuts its first teaser today with the first full episode arriving within two to three months. <\/p>\n
\n\tWritten by Kapur, \u201cWarlord\u201d follows the story of an interdimensional warrior who appears indestructible because his lover in another dimension pulls him to safety whenever he faces mortal danger. \u201cThe only time that lover can bring him to her is when he\u2019s absolutely close to death,\u201d Kapur tells Variety<\/em>. \u201cSo if the sword hits him, and he\u2019s so close to death, she shifts him to a different dimension, and you might just see the sword going through him, but he\u2019s not there.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThe cosmic saga centers on warriors who must protect mystical crystals that power an entire galaxy. These crystals represent fundamental particles beyond neutrinos that \u201ccreate the universe\u201d but exist for only \u201ca millionth of a millionth of a millionth of a millionth of a second,\u201d says Kapur.<\/p>\n \n\tKapur\u2019s vision extends far beyond traditional storytelling. He plans to make the series\u2019 production design and characters available for others to use, creating what he calls \u201ca rainforest of ideas.\u201d Users can adapt elements from \u201cWarlord\u201d for their own projects, with the stipulation that they pay one cent per use and make their creations open source for others to build upon.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cThe whole idea is that great stories can become their own platforms,\u201d Kapur says. \u201cThey don\u2019t need to be hosted by another platform.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThe director is partnering with Studio Blo, a generative AI company born in Mumbai and represented in Dubai, London, and LA that was established in 2024. Credits include Warner Music India music video \u201cThe Heartbreak Chhora,\u201d featuring Bollywood star Ayushmann Khurrana and Music Today\u2019s \u201cPurana Pyar,\u201d featuring Aishan. <\/p>\n \n\tKartik Shah serves as composer for \u201cWarlord.\u201d The project represents a dramatic departure from traditional production methods, with Kapur noting that sequences that would have taken \u201cmonths and months\u201d to create in the past are now being completed in just two weeks.<\/p>\n \n\tKapur is known for his eclectic oeuvre that spans Indian films \u201cMasoom\u201d and \u201cMr. India,\u201d hard-hitting biopic \u201cBandit Queen,\u201d the Oscar-winning \u201cElizabeth\u201d starring Cate Blanchett, \u201cThe Four Feathers\u201d starring Heath Ledger, and rom-com \u201cWhat\u2019s Love Got to Do With It?\u201d He also serves as festival director of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).<\/p>\n \n\tThe filmmaker sees AI as a democratizing force that will challenge the dominance of major studios and streaming platforms. \u201cI think we\u2019re seeing the end of studios,\u201d he says. \u201cThe studios have followed the wrong model. They assumed that big meant power. AI is going to destroy the myth of budgets, destroy the myth of being big.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tHe compares the current moment to the disruption Napster brought to the music industry, suggesting that established entertainment gatekeepers are making similar mistakes. \u201cThis new technology is empowering the individual,\u201d Kapur says. \u201cIt\u2019s pushing power back into the realm of imagination and storytelling.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThe series features innovative design elements, including spaceships inspired by jellyfish that are conceived as living, organic vessels rather than traditional metal craft. \u201cIn the distant future, we\u2019ll have materials that will heal themselves,\u201d Kapur explains. \u201cSo spaceships will be made out of living materials and organic materials that heal and live.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThese organic ships propel themselves through space using \u201cthe force of the particles, the fundamental particles of space\u201d rather than conventional rocket fuel, moving \u201clike sails using the winds of the universe.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThe project will expand beyond the series to include films and games, all built within the same creative universe. The director\u2019s philosophical approach to the project draws from observations of nature, particularly how rainforests sustain themselves through symbiotic relationships. \u201cIt\u2019s like putting a seed to create a rainforest of ideas,\u201d he says. \u201cA rainforest of production design, a rainforest of stories.
