Late-night hosts sort through Donald Trump\u2019s many distraction tactics as it\u2019s revealed he learned that his name was in the Jeffrey Epstein files in May.<\/p>\n
Seth Meyers opened his Late Night Closer Look segment on Thursday with clips of Donald Trump explicitly instructing Republicans to talk about Barack Obama stealing an election when asked about Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s like watching a magic trick and it\u2019s also a shitty trick,\u201d Meyers laughed. \u201cBut Trump seemed confident that this tactic would work.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a transparent gimmick,\u201d he added, \u201cand now he\u2019s got his intelligence director fully on board,\u201d as Tulsi Gabbard joined a White House briefing to repeat a conspiracy theory that Obama ordered an investigation into Russia and the 2016 election in order to hurt Trump.<\/p>\n
Gabbard called it \u201ca years-long conspiracy against the American people\u201d and \u201can attempt to undermine President Trump\u2019s administration\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhatever is in those Epstein files must be really fucking bad,\u201d Meyers mused. \u201cThey must be finding so many mentions of Trump they\u2019re going to have to change the name to the Trump files featuring Jeffrey Epstein. They\u2019re so desperate to distract everyone, they\u2019re claiming that Barack Obama is guilty of treasonous conspiracy and leading a coup against Trump. Barack Obama? The guy couldn\u2019t even get away with smoking a cigarette in his own house.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI honestly think we\u2019re just one Epstein story away from Trump announcing that UFOs are real,\u201d he quipped.<\/p>\n
The attempts at distraction keep \u201cfalling flat\u201d because new information about Trump\u2019s relationship with Epstein continues to emerge. On Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that in May, the US attorney general, Pam Bondi, informed Trump that his name was in the Epstein files.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course he\u2019s in the files!\u201d Meyers exclaimed. \u201cHe knew Epstein for 15 years. Epstein called him his closest friend. I have no idea if Trump committed a crime with Epstein, but the reason we\u2019re talking about this at all is because of Republicans who hyped it up for years thinking it would damage their political opponents.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meyers then played a clip of conspiracy podcast host turned deputy FBI director Dan Bongino from before the election, goading his audience to keep asking for the Epstein files. \u201cWhen you say \u2018Why have they been hiding it?\u2019 the \u2018they\u2019 is you now, bro,\u201d Meyers laughed. \u201cGuys are going to have to start doing conspiracy theory podcasts about themselves \u2013 \u2018Why am I hiding the Epstein files? Why am I trying to make it go away? Who got to me<\/em>?!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n On The Late Show, Stephen Colbert also reacted to the Wall Street Journal report that Bondi informed Trump that his name was in the files in May. \u201cI for one was shocked,\u201d he joked. \u201cWhat are you going to tell me next \u2013 that the pope is in the Catholic files? That a bear is on the cover of this month\u2019s Modern Woodspooper?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSo we don\u2019t know if he was doing the creepy crime, but we do have a cover-up,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd just like the cover-up on his face, it is patchy and there\u2019s something really ugly under there.\u201d<\/p>\n Colbert played resurfaced video of Epstein\u2019s deposition from 2010, in which he was asked if he ever socialized with Donald Trump in the presence of females under the age of 18. Epstein answered: \u201cThough I\u2019d like to answer that question, at least today, I\u2019m going to have to assert my fifth, sixth and 14th amendment rights, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cNot a great sign when the pedophile is being asked if you\u2019re doing a pervert ride-along, and their response is \u2018I\u2019d like to invoke the entire constitution, Magna Carta, the Napoleonic code and just to cover all my bases, let\u2019s throw in the entire Cheesecake Factory menu,\u2019\u201d Colbert laughed.<\/p>\n In other bad news for Trump, Epstein\u2019s brother has disputed Trump\u2019s claim that he ended the friendship with Epstein; according to Mark Epstein, Jeffrey Epstein stopped hanging out with Trump \u201cwhen he realized Trump was a crook\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cWow, that\u2019s extraordinary,\u201d Colbert marveled. \u201cJeffrey Epstein breaking it off with you because you\u2019re a crook? That\u2019s like walking into an intervention organized by Rudy Giuliani.\u201d<\/p>\n Epstein died back in 2019, \u201cbut not since Tupac Shakur has a dead man dropped so many bangers\u201d, said Josh Johnson on The Daily Show.<\/p>\n On Wednesday, video of the government\u2019s deposition of Epstein in 2010 started making the rounds online, including the question about socializing with Trump in front of females under the age of 18.
