\n\tA most unusual documentary from a most unusual filmmaker is set to receive, appropriately enough, a most unusual release, The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> has learned.<\/p>\n \n\tThe Man Who Saves the World?<\/em>, the latest doc from award-winning filmmaker Gabe Polsky<\/strong> (2014\u2019s Red Army<\/em>, 2018\u2019s In Search of Greatness<\/em> and 2022\u2019s Butcher\u2019s Crossing<\/em>), follows an eccentric American peace activist, Patrick McCollum<\/strong>, who believes that he has been chosen to fulfill an ancient prophecy \u2014 that one man will unite the indigenous tribes of South America and save the Amazon \u2014 and who then goes to extreme measures to do just that.<\/p>\n \n\tIn this stranger-than-fiction film, which I have seen a loved, Polsky, a Werner Herzog<\/strong> protege who has made a film no less wild, crazy and captivating than Herzog\u2019s best, treks all over the world with McCollum, like Sancho Panza with Don Quixote. He seems to waver \u2014\u00a0as I think most audiences will \u2014 between suspecting that McCollum may be nuts and believing that he may actually be on to something. And there is undeniably something fascinating about the man: Jane Goodall<\/strong>, who appears in the film, calls him \u201cprobably the most extraordinary person I\u2019ve ever met.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThe Man Who Saves the World?<\/em> already has a wide range of supporters \u2014 EPs include Danny McBride<\/strong>, David Gordon Green<\/strong> and Jody Hill<\/strong> of Rough House Pictures and Oscar winner Peter Farrelly<\/strong>. \u201cI love this movie and I wish everybody could see it because it\u2019s life-affirming and timely,\u201d Farrelly tells THR<\/em>. Adds McBride, Gordon Green and Hill, \u201cOnly a film this bizarre, inspiring and human could feel right at home with Rough House Pictures. This is the kind of film that makes you laugh, think and question everything \u2014\u00a0including why you\u2019re suddenly rooting for a jungle prophet with a machete and a dream.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tAt a time when all documentaries except those that center on celebrities are struggling to find traditional distribution, Polsky has teamed up with Area 23a (a company known for distributing films like Fantastic Fungi<\/em> and Common Ground<\/em>) and planned a hybrid release for his film. A series of sneak previews in the Bay Area in late September, with Polsky and McCollum in attendance, will be followed by an awards-qualifying\u00a0theatrical run in LA kicking off on Oct. 17, after which Polsky and McCollum will tour extensively with the film.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI\u2019ve made movies featuring many extraordinary characters,\u201d Polsky tells THR<\/em>, \u201cbut Patrick McCollum is truly one of a kind. You can\u2019t make up a story this strange.
