{"id":11990,"date":"2025-07-24T03:30:53","date_gmt":"2025-07-24T03:30:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=11990"},"modified":"2025-07-24T03:30:53","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T03:30:53","slug":"australia-lifts-ban-on-us-beef-but-denies-decision-was-made-to-appease-trump-australian-foreign-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=11990","title":{"rendered":"Australia lifts ban on US beef but denies decision was made to appease Trump | Australian foreign policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Labor\u2019s move to lift restrictions on imports of US beef is not related to Donald Trump\u2019s escalating tariff war, the agriculture minister has claimed, despite coming as the federal government seeks relief from new taxes on pharmaceuticals and steel and aluminium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The government confirmed on Thursday morning that the Department of Agriculture would allow the imports into Australia, saying the US now \u201ceffectively\u201d manages biosecurity risks in beef production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">A ban on beef from cows raised and slaughtered in the US was lifted in 2019 but restrictions remained on beef from cattle raised in Canada and Mexico but slaughtered in the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Changes to make protections more robust introduced in late 2024 and early 2025 allow for meat from those countries to be traced through supply chains to their source farm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The concession is expected to help pave the way for the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, to argue the case to Donald Trump that Australia should be given exemptions from the US\u2019s 50% tariff on steel and aluminium, and a looming 200% tariff planned for pharmaceuticals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The US president specifically cited Australia\u2019s restrictions on beef imports when he announced his \u201cLiberation Day\u201d tariff regime. Australia faces a 10% baseline tariff on all products exported to the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">During the federal election campaign, Albanese said Australia would not change or compromise any biosecurity rules, \u201cfull stop, exclamation mark\u201d. Despite the comments, a concession on beef had been expected from Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The agriculture, fisheries and forestry minister, Julie Collins, said the government wanted fair and open trade, which significantly benefited the cattle industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThe US beef imports review has undergone a rigorous science and risk-based assessment over the past decade,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThe Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is satisfied the strengthened control measures put in place by the US effectively manage biosecurity risks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Asked if the move would help with trade negotiations with the Trump White House, Collins said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThat will be determined but this decision is based on science, and is the culmination of a five-year period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Nationals leader David Littleproud said he was \u201csuspicious\u201d about the speed of the decision, months after Trump\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cI want to see the science and it should be predicated on science,\u201d he told ABC radio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cI\u2019m suspicious by the speed in which this has been done. The job of the federal government is to make absolutely certain that there is no biosecurity risk as a result of that, we\u2019ve done that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The new arrangements are due to come into place from 28 July, with Australian importers able to apply for permits to handle fresh beef products from the US, the largest buyer of Australian beef, ahead of China, in a $14bn market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Will Evans, chief executive of Cattle Australia, told ABC RN on Thursday morning that there would be \u201ca lot of people today who feel blindsided by this,\u201d however it was important to recognise that the decision was backed by science and the trade terms were still in Australia\u2019s favour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThere\u2019s going to be a lot of people today who are going to feel really frustrated and threatened by this. What we need to do is talk to them about these technical steps that have been taken, these are the assessments that\u2019s been taken, and this is why the decision\u2019s been made,\u201d Evans said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Australia was a \u201cglobal advocate for rules of science-based trading\u201d, but it was unfortunate that in this circumstance the government has had to \u201copen a door that we probably, as a producer, you probably wouldn\u2019t want to open,\u201d Evans said. \u201cBut we have to recognise that the science has been used to make this decision\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThis is a big and very valuable market to Australian cattle producers,\u201d Evans said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cAustralia exports more than $4bn of beef a year into the US. It\u2019s one of our largest and most important partners.
