{"id":11898,"date":"2025-07-23T17:49:55","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T17:49:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=11898"},"modified":"2025-07-23T17:49:55","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T17:49:55","slug":"effects-of-marine-heatwave-driving-foreseeable-sa-algal-bloom-could-rival-black-summer-fires-scientists-warn-south-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=11898","title":{"rendered":"Effects of marine heatwave driving \u2018foreseeable\u2019 SA algal bloom could rival black summer fires, scientists warn | South Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Scientists are warning the wildlife impacts of a marine heatwave that has driven a catastrophic algal bloom off South Australia are likely to be equivalent to those from the black summer bushfires, and demand a similar response from governments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Experts from five Australian universities say \u201cone of the worst marine disasters in living memory\u201d requires rapid investigation by federal and state governments to identify any at-risk species and fund emergency interventions if necessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">In a report by the Biodiversity Council, an independent expert group founded by 11 universities, the scientists called on governments to commit to seven actions to respond to the \u201cforeseeable and even predicted\u201d event and to prepare for \u201can increasingly dangerous and unstable future\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">As expected, the federal Senate on Wednesday nightestablished an inquiry into the disaster that has killed thousands of marine animals off SA. The Coalition senator Anne Ruston earlier accused the federal and SA governments of being too slow to act on the \u201csignificant environmental issue\u201d, \u201callowing it to massively escalate into a serious ecological disaster\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dcr-1alawo7\"><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Death on the sand: fish and animal carcasses rot on Adelaide shores amid toxic algal bloom \u2013 video<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">While she welcomed this week\u2019s assistance packages \u2013 with federal and state governments each announcing $14m \u2013 she said it seemed \u201cmanifestly inadequate to deal with the impact on the affected communities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cIt fails to recognise the magnitude of the response needed to both address the problem and deal with the clean-up,\u201d the senator for SA said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cAt a national level this marine heatwave is likely to have an equivalent impact on wildlife as the black summer bushfires, once we consider not just this harmful algal bloom, but also the extensive coral bleaching and mortality on both east and west coasts,\u201d said Prof Gretta Pecl, a Biodiversity Council member from the University of Tasmania\u2019s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">She noted that governments had previously \u201cmobilised significant funds\u201d for natural disasters, \u201cas we saw with the $2bn National Bushfire Recovery Fund, which included over $200m for wildlife recovery measures\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The federal MP for the SA seat of Mayo, Rebekha Sharkie, said the federal government needed to commit more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cWith respect, if this was happening at Bondi beach, for example, I\u2019m sure we\u2019d be seeing a much larger slice of commonwealth funding,\u201d she said, echoing recent comments from the Greens senator for SA Sarah Hanson-Young.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cAlthough there\u2019s nothing we can do to stop the current bloom, we need additional investment for monitoring and research..\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Actions called for by the Biodiversity Council include an immediate investment of at least $10m to start research into the impact of the algal bloom, establishment of a long-term monitoring program of southern reefs \u2013 modelled on the $40m 10-year Great Barrier Reef monitoring program \u2013 and rapid work to investigate at-risk species, including giant cuttlefish, which have a mass winter breeding event off Whyalla.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The council said the government assistance package was a \u201cwelcome start\u201d but was likely insufficient to support and compensate affected communities and businesses and address \u201cimmediate and longer term biodiversity needs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Pecl said the impact of the event would \u201cmassively exceed the actual boundaries of the physical bloom itself\u201d, with cascading consequences for other Australian regions because of the connectivity of oceans and their food webs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThis harmful algal bloom is just one of the major consequences of the marine heatwave ringing Australia, which has also caused extensive coral bleaching on both east and west coasts with high rates of coral mortality,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The report said the crisis was a \u201chuman-mediated disaster\u201d enabled by the extended marine heatwave and likely fed by a large pulse of nutrient-rich flood water and coastal upwelling.<\/p>\n<p>skip past newsletter promotion<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-rsfwa\">Sign up to <span>Breaking News Australia<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1xjndtj\">Get the most important news as it breaks<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dcr-1eusqlu\"><strong>Privacy Notice: <\/strong>Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties.
