\n\tApple TV+\u2018s whopping 79 Emmy nominations \u2014 a new best \u2014 doesn\u2019t even tell the whole story of the streamer\u2019s solid batting average. While HBO Max (142) and Netflix (120) boasted more, it was also from a larger pool of submissions. Apple TV+ submitted from 26 programs this year, while Netflix sent in submissions from 113 shows and HBO Max had 86.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s great for the service,\u201d Apple TV+ head of programming Matt Cherniss told Variety. <\/em>\u201cI\u2019m especially happy for all the talent that\u2019s involved in making these incredible series. All of the talent takes a leap of faith when they\u2019re deciding where to bring their shows, and I\u2019m just thrilled that they\u2019re rewarded for believing in us as a home for all their hard work.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tApple TV+\u2019s haul included \u201cSeverance,\u201d which earned the most nominations this year at 27 (which means it also led all dramas), and \u201cThe Studio,\u201d which landed 23 nods \u2014 the most of any comedy. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of texts and calls flying back and forth,\u201d Cherniss said. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t say that anyone goes into it expecting something like this. These are eight to 10 episodes for for the viewers, but this is years for all the creators involved. It\u2019s a great feeling for everyone, and for everyone here at Apple that has put their heart and soul in promoting these shows in marketing and giving everyone the support that they need.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThe success of \u201cSeverance\u201d came after a three-year gap between the show\u2019s first season and its second, due in part to the Hollywood strikes and other production delays. Asked whether Season 3 was on track, Cherniss said, \u201cI think everyone\u2019s just going to take a deep breath and enjoy where we\u2019re at. I know they\u2019re going as as quickly as they can. When you have the success that a show like \u2018Severance\u2019 has, you want to make sure you deliver on every level when the show comes back, and that takes some time. But they\u2019re on it, and I think I\u2019m feeling really good about where we\u2019re at.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tDoes that mean another three-year delay? \u201cNo one wants it to be another three year gap\u2026 I don\u2019t believe that we have a production start date yet, but we\u2019re moving in that direction,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m as excited as everyone else to see where the series goes. I may have a few ideas about where it\u2019s heading, but I like to be surprised as much as anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tAs for \u201cThe Studio,\u201d the show pulled off four of the five comedy guest star noms: Bryan Cranston, Dave Franco, Ron Howard, Anthony Mackie and Martin Scorsese, all as versions of themselves. Cherniss credited creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg for pulling off that caliber of cameos.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cThose are not easy, those cameos to come by inside of shows, and I think that everyone did it with a lot of joy,\u201d he said. \u201cThey went all in on those characters. And I think you really feel it inside the show.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tOther cameos included Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos. But why no Apple execs like boss Tim Cook, Apple worldwide video heads Jamie Ehrlich and Zach Van Amburg, or even Cherniss himself? \u201cWe\u2019re happy exactly where we are,\u201d Cherniss said. \u201cI like where I sit.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tAmong other nominations on Tuesday, Harrison Ford\u2019s first ever Emmy nod \u2014 thanks to Apple TV+\u2019s \u201cShrinking\u201d \u2014 stood out. Meanwhile, exec producer David E. Kelley is busy at work on an entirely new story for Season 2 of \u201cPresumed Innocent,\u201d which earned four noms. \u201cDavid has a great plan and a great story for season two, but I think we\u2019re keeping that under wraps for now,\u201d Cherniss said.<\/p>\n \n\tCherniss didn\u2019t have any news on further seasons of \u201cPachinko\u201d (which landed two nods for Season 2) or \u201cDope Thief,\u201d which earned a limited\/anthology nom for Brian Tyree Henry. \u201cWe all cheered as that moment came across this morning,\u201d Cherniss said. \u201cHe\u2019s so great in \u2018Dope Thief,\u2019 I think his performance is just amazing. That\u2019s a show that the audience really enjoyed as well. His performance was so deserving.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tAs for what\u2019s next, Cherniss pointed to Jason Momoa\u2019s upcoming \u201cChief of War,\u201d as well as Season 4 of \u201cThe Morning Show.\u201d \u201cThat show is always pushing boundaries and entertaining, and Season 4 is no different,\u201d he said. \u201cThey have fun with the subject matter.
